Trailhead Directions: From town of Dolores, head E on Hwy 145 for 12 miles to jctn of NFSR (National Forest Service Road) #535. Turn left and travel 23.3 miles. The parking area is on the right side NFSR #535. The trailhead is 2.2 miles S of the town of Dunton.

Carpenter Natural Area can be accessed from two locations. On the East side, it begins on NW Mildred Rd and Empire St. On the W end, the trail access is on Lebanon Rd north of HWY 491. The main 1.5 mile trail is paved. There are also many dirt paths that veer off into the hills perfect for the more adventurous.

Canyon of the Ancients National Monument about 20 miles of trail spotted with ancient ruins to RUN +HIKE. Located 15.6 miles from Cortez, head south on HWY 491 for 4 miles and turn R onto County Rd. G. For the next 12 miles enjoy the McElmo Canyon. The trailhead will be on the north side of the road with a slickrock parking lot. 

Hawkins Preserve is a 122-acre property within the city limits of Cortez, Colorado. Enjoy prehistorical archaeological sites on your Adventure into our backyard. It is protected by a conservation easement held by the Montezuma Land Conservancy
